Spin

Return to previous page Spin is a story of a young and beautiful Nigerian girl (Ruky) who has just been ordered to leave the United Kingdom by the Home Office, and her quest to stay in the country by any means necessary, using her feminine wiles to manipulate the ‘useful’ men around her.

Spin was written and directed by Ayo Shonaiya, a Nigerian who lives and works in London UK. A graduate of Film and Television from the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale in Florida and of Law from the University of Westminster School of Law in London, Ayo is one of the fast rising independent filmmakers in the UK and Nigerian film industry. His last film King Of My Country (1997) has been critically acclaimed as one of the best Nigerian films ever by the Guardian newspaper after its television premiere on AIT in the year 2000.

Spin had its world premiere at the Atmattan Black Film Festival in New York in November 2000 and made its theatrical debut in February 2001 at the Rio Cinema in London to a capacity crowd. The film has since been screened at the Raindance Independent Film Festival and the BFM Black Film Festival in London (where it was voted festival favourite and chosen as the film to close the 11 day festival). Spin was also screened at the 9th Pan African Film Festival in Los Angeles California 2001 (Nomination for best new director) and the Pan African Film and Television Festival of Ouagadougou (Fespaco 2001) where it was also nominated for best film on digital video.

Spin parades a combination of the best of Nigerian talents abroad. The lead role of Ruky is played by Caroline Chikezie who is currently the most prominent Nigerian actress working in the UK film and television industry today. Her list of films includes Virtual Sexuality and Babymother. Her television credits include Brothers and Sisters (BBC), Casualty (ITV), As If (Channel 4), Babyfather (BBC) and currently Footballer’s Wives on ITV. Caroline has also appeared in various commercials including McDonalds, BT Cellnet, Spanish Telecom and the American Express Blue Card.

Other cast members include Chebe Azih who plays millionaire Lucky. Chebe is the most experienced actor on the Spin set. A former child actor who has appeared in many Nigerian home videos before relocating to the UK, Spin is Chebe’s third film with director Ayo Shonaiya after More Blessing (1996) and King Of My Country (1997).

The part of Dele, the quick thinking and sometimes aggressive lawyer in the film is played by Ayo Shonaiya who is also the writer and director of the film. Although not a trained actor, Ayo is more recognised in the UK for his role as ‘Adewale Omoba’, the eager and fearless hustler in the film King Of My Country and also as the principal producer of programs at BEN Television Sky Digital Channel 184.
